The laminating process, where different types of steel are combined to produce patterns visible on the blade's surface, forms the basis for pattern welding. The VG-10 steel core is forged with 33 layers of Damascus steel on each side. After undergoing a high-temperature heat treatment and a deep cryogenic process, the result is an exotic and gorgeous appearance. Damascus steel knives are stronger than their historic counterparts, as they contain fewer impurities and are made with homogeneous layers. The blade edge can reach a Rockwell hardness of HRC 60±2.

"How to Recognize Real and Fake Damascus?" In some cases, people try to pass off regular stainless steel with no layering as Damascus by laser printing a design on the blade. These are easy to spot, as the pattern could rub off. Real Damascus is intrinsic to the steel itself, while fake Damascus is merely a facade. To test, you can use sandpaper to achieve a satin look, then etch it with ferric chloride or muriatic acid. If the Damascus pattern reappears, it's real; if not, it's a fake.
